From January 16 to 22, 2023, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur hosted a seven-day hands-on training course on “Advanced Characterization Techniques”. This programme was designed to assist PhD students and faculty members at tier 2 and 3 universities to expand their knowledge of research and development, through hands-on experience with the advanced tools available at IIT Kanpur.
The Synergistic Training Program Utilizing the Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (STUTI) was funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and was held in conjunction with Amity University. Over the course of seven days, attendees were exposed to lab demonstrations, lectures, debates, and interactive sessions.
At the inauguration event, Professor A R Harish, Dean of Research and Development at IIT Kanpur, expressed that the program would familiarize the partakers with highly advanced scientific instruments. He encouraged them to take full advantage of the chance and ask as many questions as they can. He also thanked them in advance for sharing the learned information with their respective institutions.
Dr A Chakraborty, Deputy Director General of the Amity Foundations for Science Technology and Innovation Alliance, emphasized the importance of the program, saying that it will help the participants be on par with researchers from other countries. He also urged them to share the knowledge they gain from this program with their peers at home.
Head of the Centre for Continuing Education at IIT Kanpur, Professor B V Rathish Kumar, and Professor Soumik Mukhopadhyay of the Department of Physics, highlighted the importance of collaborative learning as a tool for academic success. They explained that the participants were provided with a platform to learn from one another, and were taught various experimental techniques. They also encouraged the individuals to gain an understanding of the theoretical concepts behind these techniques.
During the conclusion of the program, Professor Harshawardhan Wanare, Head of the Physics Department at IIT Kanpur, exhorted the students to be imaginative and self-motivated for better comprehension. He also advocated for the students to gain knowledge from their companions to take advantage of the upcoming areas of science and technology for the advantage of society.
