Chief Minister Sawant announced that an IIT campus will be established in South Goa.

Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa, has announced that an IIT campus will be established in South Goa, and they are currently looking for a suitable location. This follows the cancellation of a previous plan to build the campus at Shel-Melaulim village in North Goa due to local demonstrations in 2021.

Altone D’Costa, the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Congress from the Quepem area in South Goa, proposed that the IIT campus be set up in his constituency during a debate in the House, claiming that land was available in Betul. However, he declined to disclose the exact location due to potential “unnecessary protest”.

At the recent Winter Session of the Goa Assembly, the idea of establishing an IIT campus in the South Goa District was discussed. However, the project was abandoned due to the limited space in Cotarli, Sanguem taluka. In a statement to reporters on Monday, the CM said that the search for a suitable land for the campus was still on. He also mentioned that some people had opposed the land acquisition for the IIT Goa campus.
