The National Commission for the Protection of Children’s Rights (NCPCR), the nation’s highest authority on children’s rights, demanded an explanation from the Bihar government on Wednesday regarding 37 government schools in the state’s districts with a majority of Muslims observing a weekly holiday on Friday rather than Sunday. 37 government schools in five blocks in the heavily Muslim Kishanganj area of Bihar have reportedly started observing Friday as their weekly holiday in place of Sunday, according to media sources.

NCPCR chairperson Priyank Kanoongo questioned whose orders it was made to choose Friday as the weekly holiday rather than Sunday in a letter to Bihar chief secretary Amir Subhani. The Bihar government has been asked to provide a report on the situation to the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) within ten days.
