The Supreme Court rejected a request to postpone the NEET PG 2023 exam, which is due to take place on March 5. The counsel for the petitioner, Gopal Sankaranarayanan, noted that this situation started with the introduction of NEET and that states used to have their own processes before. In response, Justice S Ravindra Bhat mentioned that this is part of an evolutionary process and it is difficult to balance when one thing is changed on one side and something else is affected on the other.
The Additional Solicitor General, Aishwarya Bhati, informed the court that they wanted to start counselling on 15.07.2022, not waiting for the month of August. The remaining students would be considered on a case-by-case basis and allowed to be part of the counselling process temporarily. The senior counsel responded by saying that it was impractical for those who finish later. The court felt that it would do all it could in the situation and declared that they would leave it at that.
Moreover, when the senior counsel said that a lot of candidates will still not have the eligibility to come for their choice of subjects, Justice Bhat replied, “There is nothing in the world to say that they cannot reapply.”
On February 24, the National Medical Commission (NMC) examined the petitions of those who went to the Telangana High Court seeking an extension of the exam due to lack of preparation time and declared that the exam will take place on the designated date of March 5. The Telangana High Court had declined to postpone the postgraduate medical entrance exam and had requested the commission to promptly consider the requests.
A separate appeal had also been filed with the Supreme Court by applicants. Students have been asking for the deferment as there is a large gap between the exam date and the counselling.
Medical organizations such as the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) and Indian Medical Association (IMA) have requested the health minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, to delay the 2023 NEET PG examination by two to three months. These groups have argued that if the Foreign Medical Graduate Exam (FMGE) is postponed, then the same should apply to the NEET PG.
A collective of applicants submitted a request on the Change.org website asking for the NEET PG examination to be postponed. Over 16,000 individuals signed the online request. However, Mandaviya had declared to the Lok Sabha on February 10 that the NEET PG 2023 would not be postponed. This decision was made to keep any additional postponement of the test and counselling process caused by COVID-19 from occurring.
