Ajay Kumar Dubey left his position as Jawaharlal Nehru University’s rector (JNU). Days after a fight erupted between students and security personnel over the release of delayed student fellowships, he resigned.

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) announced that “Professor Ajay Kumar Dubey has resigned from the post of Rector and the same has been accepted by the competent authority.” The ABVP said in a statement that the rector had planned a lethal attack on students who had applied for fellowships, harassed a female colleague, and was engaged in running NGOs illegally. The statement said, “Our Satyagraha has entered its 20th day and will continue until the Administration addresses students’ concerns. An Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) team met with JNU Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit and Union Minister Jitendra Singh last week to urge the suspension of Rector Ajay Dubey.

While the administration blamed students for the event, the ABVP members claimed that the JNU administration attacked them. The Delhi Police also filed two FIRs in the wake of the incident. A group of JNU lecturers claimed earlier this month that rector Ajay Kumar Dubey was operating two NGOs from his university address in contravention of the law. Ajay Dubey, however, refuted the accusation.
