Four gold, four silver, and six bronze medals were won by an Indian school team in the International Earth Science Olympiad-2022 in the Italian Aosta Valley. According to a news release, 200 students representing 38 nations virtually participated in the competition. The children from Tamil Nadu’s Kyishong Bharali Das, Kerala’s Bhanav Namboodri, Maharashtra’s Sonit Sisolekar, Punjab’s Abhijay Singh Khehra, Rajasthan’s Avishi Agrawal, Chandigarh’s Jaagrit Gaur, Odisha’s Siddhangana Sahoo, and Kota’s Arush Chaudhary won medals (Rajasthan).

The Geological Society of India (GSI), Bengaluru, organised this programme with funding from the Ministry of Earth Sciences as a community outreach programme for students. Everyone was proud of the Indian team’s achievements in the tests at IESO-2022, which saw them win four gold, four silver, and six bronze medals. The eight-person Indian squad was selected following two rounds of thorough screening. The first selection was made from around 3,000 students who took an all-India written exam, and the second was made from a two-week training session that GSI Bengaluru organised and that was led by eminent scientists from the nation. The mentors were K S Godhavari of the GSI in Bangalore and Hema Achyuthan of the Anna University in Chennai.

Observers were R Bhaskar from IGNOU, New Delhi and Mithila Verma from the Ministry of Earth Sciences. These students are studying in classes 9, 10 and 11.
