The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with three prestigious institutes, including IIT Guwahati and IIT Gandhinagar, to establish a ‘BIS Standardization Chair Professor.’ This is an effort to bring academia into the standardisation process and make teaching Indian standards a fundamental part of the curriculum. Agreements have also been made with NIT Calicut, in addition to IIT Guwahati and IIT Gandhinagar.

Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, expressed in a statement that the deal will expand and improve the process of creating standards by funding research and development endeavors, motivating young people, and connecting with startups and incubators at academic centers to create new standards and adhere to the existing ones.

The BIS Standardization Chair has been established to conduct research, offer instruction, and provide education in the area of standardization and conformity assessment, with a focus on topics such as civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical and earthquake engineering.
