On Sunday, Jignesh Mevani, a Congress MLA and Dalit leader from Gujarat, conducted a candlelight vigil in the Maninagar area in pursuit of justice for Darshan Solanki. Darshan, a freshman student, had allegedly taken his own life on February 12 at the renowned Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. His parents reside in Uttamnagar, a locality of Maninagar.

Ramesh Solanki, the father of the deceased student, expressed that he is sure his son will receive justice due to the support he was given. He specified that a Special Investigation Team needs to be created to look into the factors that resulted in his son’s death. Representatives of the Gujarat government also met with him and guaranteed justice. Consequently, the candle march commenced from Uttamnagar Slum Quarters in Maninagar and concluded at Dr B R Ambedkar’s statue in Sarangpur. Amul Bhatt, the BJP MLA from Maninagar, was also present at the march.

Mevani criticized the Maharashtra government, which is a part of the Bharatiya Janata Party, for not forming a Special Investigation Team or filing an FIR in the case thus far. He expressed his sorrow that the family had to go to the streets to make their requests heard, and also conveyed his disappointment that the BJP government in Maharashtra was not ready to form an SIT or register an FIR. He also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not made any comment on the incident. He then concluded by saying that this discrimination against SC, ST, and OBC students in educational institutions must stop.

Bhatt declared that Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will be having a meeting with the Solanki family in the upcoming days. They mentioned that Darshan was a talented scholar and they are staying in contact with his family. They expressed their endorsement of an investigation. The Gujarat CM has sent out a communication to the family through Bhatt and the family has informed them that they will be meeting the CM after they have finished some customs.
