After Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit rejected the state government’s initiative and requested a list of three names to choose from, renowned cardiologist Dr. Gurpreet Singh Wander withdrew his name from consideration for the position of vice chancellor at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. According to sources, Wander withdrew from consideration for the position for personal reasons. He reportedly informed the chief minister’s office of his choice. Without Wander’s name, the administration of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, would now have to present a panel of three candidates for the position of vice-chancellor. The recommendation to appoint Wander as VC was included in the file that Governor Purohit returned on Tuesday.

Chief Minister Mann recently made the announcement regarding Wander’s appointment.

AAP government mishandled the appointment process, according to Shiromani Akali Dal general secretary Bikram Singh Majithia, which caused a respected cardiologist to be embarrassed and compelled to withdraw his application for the VC position. “Dr. Gurpreet Singh Wander, a renowned cardiologist, was humiliated and forced to withdraw from consideration for the position of vice chancellor at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in Faridkot because the @AAPPunjab government handled the recruitment procedure improperly. The government owes Dr Wander an apology “In a tweet, Majithia stated.

When questioned about the governor’s refusal to select the state government’s pick for the VC position, CM Mann responded on Tuesday that the state government would offer a panel of three names for an appointment if the governor so desired. Mann, though, had said that according to custom, the governor must approve the government’s suggested name. The resignation of Dr. Raj Bahadur, who left his position after being “humiliated” by Health Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra, was accepted by the CM in August. Jouramajra faced criticism in July after it was claimed that he had forced Bahadur to lie on an unclean mattress at a hospital.

Notably, there have been numerous disagreements between Governor Purohit and Chief Minister Mann. Recently, Purohit took offence to Mann missing a reception hosted in President Droupadi Murmu’s honour while she was making her first visit to Chandigarh. Before this, there had been a dispute over calling a session of the Punjab Assembly between the governor and the AAP government. When the AAP administration planned to introduce a confidence motion exclusively in the House on September 22, the governor withdrew his approval to conduct a special session after consulting legal counsel. Later, the governor only gave his approval after learning specifics about the parliamentary business from the government.
