Eligibility Criteria for NDA 2022

Female Eligibility in NDA: Recent Changes
Previously, only unmarried male candidates were permitted to take the NDA exam, and female candidates were not permitted to apply, but this policy has recently changed.
Kush Kalra filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court to allow women to appear for the NDA in 2021. The petition raised concerns about the violation of Articles 14, 15, 16, and 19 of the Indian Constitution by denying female candidates access to the NDA Exam.
In response, Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Hrishikesh Roy issued an interim order allowing female candidates to appear for the NDA exam in 2021. The Ministry of Defence was in charge of making decisions about age criteria, nature of training, intake strength, training standards, and medical and physical standards. Separate physical infrastructure and residential quarters with strict physical separation, including separate bathroom cubicles, swimming, equitation, games, and sports facilities, were also specified for female candidates.
Female candidates must meet the same age, educational, and marital status requirements as male candidates, according to the NDA 2022 notification’s female eligibility criteria.
Nationality Criteria for NDA
To be eligible for the NDA application, all candidates, including females, must meet the nationality requirements. The candidate must fit into one of the following categories:
- A citizen of India
- A subject of Nepal or Bhutan
- Before January 1, 1962, a Tibetan refugee who came to India with the intention of settling permanently.
- A PIO (Person of Indian origin) is someone who has migrated from the countries specified below, with the intention of permanently settling in India. The nationals from the following countries would fall under this category such as Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (Formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar ), Zaire, Ethiopia, Vietnam, Zambia, Malawi.
Note: All foreign nationals must present a certificate of NDA eligibility issued by the Indian government. Candidates who are Nepalese Gorkha subjects, on the other hand, will not require this certificate.
Age Criteria for NDA
Only unmarried male and female aspirants aged 16.5 to 19.5 are eligible to apply for the NDA age limit, according to the eligibility criteria. Candidates who are over the NDA’s age limit will not be considered for the exam. The date of birth mentioned on the application and the Matriculation or Secondary School Leaving Certificate must be the same. Candidates must meet the NDA eligibility criteria for age limit as specified by the relevant authorities. Candidates who want to take this exam must be in the age range given below in the table:

Educational Qualification for NDA
The Army wing, Navy wing, and Air Force wing all require the NDA qualification, which can be obtained by passing the NDA exam. In accordance with the prescribed NDA educational criteria, candidates who are appearing or have passed the 12th grade under the 10+2 school education pattern or an equivalent examination are eligible. Note:
- Candidates who are currently enrolled in a Class 12 or equivalent examination are eligible to apply for the NDA exam.

Marital Status for NDA
An applicant’s first priority should be to become familiar with the exam’s eligibility criteria before beginning their preparation. In comparison to other organisations, the NDA and its criteria are unique. In order to be eligible for the NDA, you must be unmarried. Check out the list below for a complete set of rules:
- The NDA examination is only open to unmarried male and female candidates.
- Candidates should not marry until they have completed their Academy training.
- If a candidate marries during training, he will be discharged and must pay back the government of India for all expenses incurred on his behalf.
Physical Fitness and Medical Standards for NDA
At the time of submitting the NDA Application forms, the candidate must meet certain physical fitness or feature requirements. The physical fitness requirements of the NDA vary slightly depending on the position for which the candidate is applying. It is important to note that a candidate who has resigned or withdrawn from any of the Armed Forces’ training academies due to disciplinary reasons will be ineligible to apply for the NDA exam 2022.
The following are the physical test requirements for the NDA:
- The applicant’s physical and mental health must be in good working order, and he or she must be free of diseases and disabilities.
- After full expansion, the chest should not be less than 81cm. After full inspiration, the chest should expand by more than 5cm. An X-ray of the chest will be taken to look for any diseases.
- Bones and joints should not be harmed in any way. These should be properly developed.
- There should be no history of mental breakdowns or fits in the candidate.
- A hernia that has not been operated on will result in disqualification. In the case of a hernia that has been operated, it should be done within one year of the final medical examination.
- The candidate’s liver and spleen should be normal in size.
- It is expected that your hearing will be normal. At a distance of 610 cms, the candidate should be able to hear a whisper with each ear. There should not be any ear, nose, or throat disease.
- Blood pressure should be within normal limits.
- There should be no heart or blood vessel disease, either functional or organic.
- There should be no hydrocele, varicocele, or piles, as well as no other skin conditions.
- Any disease of the abdomen’s internal organs will result in disqualification.
- Urine will also be examined, and any abnormalities discovered will result in disqualification.
- A sufficient number of natural and healthy teeth should be present in the applicant. A minimum of 14 dental points should be present.
- Any congenital structural anomaly that is discovered during the USG abdomen examination will result in disqualification.
- Candidate must not have a weak constitution or be overweight or underweight.
Case of Body Tattoos
- Permanent body tattoos (if any) should only be present on the inner side of the forearm, candidates must ensure this.
- Tattoos on the inside of the elbow to the wrist, as well as the reverse side of the palm/back (dorsal) side of the hand, will not be accepted by UPSC.
- Tattoos on any other part of the body that are permanent are also not permitted.
- Acceptance will be granted on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the traditions involved, if the candidate belongs to a tribe where tattoo marks on the face or body are customary. In such cases, the authorities’ decision would be final.
Dental Conditions
Any of the following dental conditions will result in the application being rejected:
- Progressive or recurrent pathological conditions of the jaws are present.
- Significant jaw discrepancies between the upper and lower jaws that may obstruct efficient mastication and/or speech will be rejected.
- Temporo-Mandibular Symptoms Tenderness and clicking in the joints. Dislocation of the TMJ on wide opening was measured at the incisal edges with a mouth opening of less than 30 mm.
- All of these conditions have the potential to be cancerous.
- Submucous fibrosis with or without restriction of mouth opening is a clinical diagnosis.
- Gross visible calculus, periodontal pockets, and/or gum bleeding are all signs of poor oral health.
- Tooth mobility: If the candidate has more than two loose teeth, he or she will be deemed unfit.
- Candidates who have had cosmetic or post-traumatic maxillofacial surgery/trauma for at least 24 weeks from the date of surgery/injury will be considered unfit.
Spinal Conditions
The presence of any of these conditions automatically disqualifies the candidate:
- The spine’s granulomatous disease.
- Rheumatoid arthritis and allied disorders / Ankylosing spondylitis / Osteoarthritis, spondylosis, and degenerative joint disease / Non-articular rheumatism (e.g. rotator cuff lesions, tennis elbow, recurrent lumbago, etc.) & Miscellaneous disorders such as SLE, polymyositis, and vasculitis
- Spondylolisthesis/spondylolysis
- Vertebral compression fracture
- SC Heuerman’s disease (Adolescent kyphosis)
- When there is a loss of cervical lordosis, there are clinically restricted movements of the cervical spine.
- Cervical ribs on one side or both sides with a stable neurological or circulatory deficit.
- Cobb’s method indicates a scoliosis of more than 15 degrees
- .Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)
- Schmorl’s nodes can be found on multiple levels.
- Anomalies of the atlanto-occipital and atlantoaxial regions.
- Hemivertebrae and/or incomplete block (fused) vertebrae at any level of the cervical, dorsal, or lumbar spine, as well as complete block (fused) vertebrae at multiple levels of the cervical or dorsal spine.
- At all levels, there is unilateral sacralisation or lumbarisation (complete or incomplete) and bilateral incomplete sacralisation or lumbarisation.
X-Ray Examination
An x-ray will be performed to detect any of the conditions listed below, as the presence of any of these will disqualify the applicant for Armed Forces positions:
- The spine’s granulomatous disease.
- Arthritis/spondylosis
- Cobb’s Method indicates a scoliosis of more than 15 degrees (10 degrees for Army and Navy).
- Lordosis/Kyphosis is a condition that is more severe than mild kyphosis.
- Spondylolisthesis, spondylosis, and spondylolysis are all terms for the same thing.
- The nucleus pulposus has herniated.
- A Vertebral Compression Fracture is a type of vertebral compression fracture.
- Disease of Sacralization
- Cervical ribs that show signs of neurological or circulatory problems.
- Schmorl’s node can be found on multiple levels.
- Anomalies of the atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial regions.
- Unilateral or Bilateral Sacralization with Incomplete Sacralization
- If completely sacralized, Spina Bifida other than SV 1 and LV 5
- Any other abnormality, if a specialist considers it necessary.
Vision Standards
- The candidate’s corrected distance vision should be 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse.
- Myopia should not exceed 2.5 diopters, and hypermetropia should not exceed 3.5 diopters, including astigmatism.
- It’s important to remember that an ophthalmoscope will be used to perform an internal NDA exam of the eye to rule out any potential eye diseases.
- Candidates must be able to see clearly through both eyes. The Army’s colour vision standard is (CP-III).
- It is critical to be able to distinguish between red and green colours.
- It will be necessary to present a certificate stating that neither the candidate nor any member of his family has suffered from congenital night blindness.
- Another important point to note is that candidates who have had Radial Keratotomy or Laser Surgery to improve their vision will be permanently rejected from all Services.

NDA Medical Standards & Procedures for Navy Officers
A candidate recommended by the Services Selection Board (SSB) will be examined by a Board of Service Medical Officers for an NDA medical exam (Special Medical Board). The Academy will only admit candidates who have been declared fit by the Medical Board.
However, within 42 days of the Special Medical Board, the President of the Medical Board will notify the candidates declared unfit of their results, and the procedure for an Appeal Medical Board (AMB) will be completed in a Command Hospital or equivalent.
Candidates who have been found unfit by the Appeal Medical Board (AMB) can request a Review Medical Board (RMB) within one day of the AMB’s conclusion.
During the Special Medical Board, the following investigations will be required. A candidate may, however, request any other investigation that is required or indicated:
- Complete Haemogram
- RE/ME Urine
- USG of the abdomen and pelvis
- PA views from an X-ray of the chest
NDA Medical Standards & Procedures for Flying and Ground Duty Branches
This section will go over the medical requirements for candidates to be eligible for commissioning into the IAF’s Flying and Ground Duty Branches through the NDA. During their induction, all candidates should meet the basic physical fitness standards that will allow them to successfully complete the training and subsequent service in a variety of climatic and work environments.
A candidate’s physical fitness will not be determined until the entire examination demonstrates that he or she is physically and mentally capable of withstanding severe physical and mental strain for extended periods of time.
NDA Physical Requirements for Air Force
Every candidate who meets the physical requirements listed below in order to be eligible for the NDA exam will choose the Air Force. The following are the various physical standards.
- Spine injuries – Cases of old spine fractures are unfit. Any residual spine deformity or compression of a vertebra will result in rejection.
- Nerve injuries – Injuries to the trunks of the larger nerves that result in loss of function or the formation of a neuroma, which causes significant pain and tingling, indicate that the person is unfit for flying duties.
- Surgical Scars – Minor, well-healed scars, such as those from any superficial surgery, do not necessarily indicate unsuitability for work. Scarring that covers a large portion of a limb or torso and may cause a functional limitation or an unsightly appearance is unfit.
- Birthmarks – Birthmarks with abnormal pigmentation, such as hypo- or hyper-pigmentation, are not acceptable. However, a small, congenital mole or naevus is acceptable if it is less than 10 cm in diameter. Multiple naevi or vascular tumours that interfere with function or are irritated all of the time are not acceptable.
NDA General Physical Standards for Officer Entry
Candidates interested in becoming officers must meet the following physical requirements. Failure to meet any of the criteria will result in automatic disqualification.
Requirements for the Cardiovascular System
- Candidates may be rejected in the medical round due to a variety of cardiovascular risk factors. History of chest pain, breathlessness, palpitation, fainting attacks, giddiness, rheumatic fever, ankle swelling, chorea, frequent sore throats, and tonsillitis should all be factored into the cardiovascular system’s evaluation.
- A person whose blood pressure is consistently greater than or equal to 140/90 mm Hg will be disqualified. If a person has had any type of cardiac surgery in the past, he or she will be deemed unfit.
Requirements for the Respiratory System
- Individuals must be aware of certain respiratory-related conditions that may result in rejection. A history of pulmonary tuberculosis, pleurisy with effusion, expectorant cough, haemoptysis, frequent episodes of bronchitis, asthma, spontaneous pneumothorax, and chest injuries should be sought.
- Any significant residual pleural thickening will be grounds for rejection. If a person has had bronchial asthma, wheezing, or allergic rhinitis in the past, they may be rejected.
Requirements for the Endocrine and Dermatological Systems
- Candidates with diabetes mellitus will be disqualified. Blood sugar (Fasting and after Glucose Load) and HbA1c will be measured and recorded for a candidate with a family history of Diabetes Mellitus.
- Interrogation with care, followed by a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). To get a clear picture of the nature and severity of any dermatological condition claimed or discovered, a medical examination of the candidate’s skin is required.
- Dermatologists should be consulted for borderline skin conditions. Any fungal infection of any part of the body (such as Tinea Cruris and Tinea Corporis) will render you unfit. Only after recovery from scabies can you be considered fit.
NDA Exam 2022 Requirements for Spinal Conditions
A past medical history of disease or injury to the spine or sacroiliac joints that has prevented the candidate from leading a physically active life is a reason for commissioning rejection.
Rejection is likely if you have a history of lumbar/spinal fractures/prolapsed intervertebral discs, as well as surgical treatment for these conditions. Candidates can learn more about the mode of examination and other required spinal conditions by visiting this page.
Upper and Lower Limb Assessments are affected by a variety of factors.
Rejection will be based on deformities of the upper limbs or their parts. Candidates who have had a limb amputated will not be accepted. However, amputation of the little finger’s terminal phalanx on both sides is acceptable.
Healed Fractures
Healed upper limb fractures are not acceptable in the following circumstances:-
(i) Fractures of the articular surfaces. Fractures linked to neuro-vascular problems
(ii) Fractures that are disjointed. Functional impairment due to a fracture
(iii) Fractures with in-situ implants. After evaluation by an orthopaedic surgeon, a fracture of the upper limb that presents six months after the injury and has none of the above-mentioned sequelae is acceptable.
Hands and Fingers
Except when polydactyly is excised, syndactyly and polydactyly will be considered unfit. Unfitness will be determined by deformities and movement limitations. The degree of stiffness will be used to assess the painless limitation of wrist movement. Dorsiflexion loss is more serious than palmar flexion loss.
Acceptable/Inacceptable Conditions for the Central Nervous System
- If a candidate has a history of mental illness or psychological problems, a thorough investigation and psychiatric referral are required. Normally, such cases should be rejected. The majority of the time, the past is not willingly shared. Direct questioning should be used to try to elicit a history, which may or may not be fruitful.
- Every examiner should form an overall impression of the candidate’s personality and may inquire about the candidate’s stability and habitual reactions to difficult and stressful situations. It’s also important to consider your family history and previous medication usage.
- If you have a history of insomnia, phobias, nightmares, or recurrent or persistent sleepwalking or bedwetting, you will be rejected.
- Recurrent headaches are most commonly caused by a previous head injury or migraine. Other types of sporadic headaches must be considered in light of their likely cause.
- A candidate with a migraine that was severe enough to prompt him to seek medical help should normally be rejected. Even a single migraine attack with visual disturbance or Migrainous epilepsy is enough to render a person unfit.
Medical Conditions for NDA during Examination
Candidates must be physically and mentally fit as stated in the following statements during the NDA Medical Examination.
- The candidate is both mentally and intellectually sound. The hearing is normal, and there are no signs of ear, nose, or throat disease.
- Each eye’s vision meets the required standard. His or her eyes are bright, clear, and free of squints or other abnormalities. Eyeball movement should be complete and unrestricted in all directions.
- There are no barriers to speech. There isn’t any glandular enlargement.
- His or her chest is well-formed, and his or her heart and lungs are healthy.
- Candidates’ limbs are well-formed and fully developed.
- There is no evidence of any type or degree of hernia.
- All of the joints move freely and perfectly. The feet and toes are in good shape.
- Candidates who have had any type of refractive surgery, such as PRK/LASIK/SMILE, can be considered fit for any branch except submarines, diving, and the MARCO cadre.
Ear, Nose & Throat Standards for NDA
To avoid any last-minute stress, an individual must be aware of the required Ear, Nose, and Throat standards in advance. These are the most important requirements.
- At a distance of 610 cm, a candidate should be able to hear a forced whisper with each ear separately, with their backs to the examiner.
- Once the graft has taken up, tympanoplasty with or without cortical mastoidectomy for a dry central perforation of the tympanic membrane is considered curative if the tympanic membrane is intact, mobile, and has a free field hearing of 610 cm in each ear 45 separately, as well as a normal pure tone hearing threshold.
- After complete healing and graft stabilisation, a three-month gap is considered sufficient.
Height and Weight Requirements for NDA
The NDA’s eligibility criteria are heavily influenced by height and weight. The candidate for the NDA examination must be physically fit. The NDA height and weight parameters are primary requirements of the candidates that must be met, and no exceptions will be made unless they specifically mention it.
Individuals can comprehend the guidelines by using the following points and table:
- The Body Mass Index (BMI) should be less than 25.
- Males should have a waist-to-hip ratio of less than 0.9, while females should have a ratio of less than 0.8.
- Males should have a waist circumference of less than 90 cm and females should have a waist circumference of less than 80 cm.
- All biochemical and metabolic parameters should be normal.
- If a candidate’s weight falls below the required minimum, he or she will be rejected (not in some exceptions mentioned below). Candidates with documented evidence of bodybuilding, wrestling, or boxing at the national level will be allowed to lift weights above the acceptable limit.
- Candidates under the age of 17 will have their height and weight measured according to the ‘Indian Academy of Paediatrics growth charts for height, weight, and BMI for 05 Years to 16 Years Old Children’, as amended from time to time.
Height & Weight for Army and Air Force
- The minimum height required is 157 cms and for applying in the Indian Air Force it is 162.5 cms.
- There are some exceptions for candidates who are from a particular region.
- The minimum height requirement for Gorkhas and candidates from the hills of North-Eastern India, Garhwal, and Kumaon is 5 cm less than the figure mentioned above. Candidates from Lakshadweep are eligible for a 2 cms relaxation.
- Candidates who are under the age of 18 at the time of the examination will be given a growth allowance of 02 cm. The Flying Branch requires a minimum height of 163 cm. The Flying Branch also requires anthropometric standards such as sitting height, leg length, and thigh length.

NDA Eligibility Criteria 2022: Other Conditions
Candidates must also meet a few additional physical requirements in addition to the ones mentioned above.
- There are no signs or symptoms of a weakened constitution or bodily defects.
- A chest that is well-developed; a fully expanded chest should not be less than 81cm in length.
