The growing importance of road transport in comparison to rail transport is because of the following reasons: (i) Construction cost of roads is much lower than that of railways lines. (ii) Roads can pass through comparatively more dissected and undulating topography. (iii) Road transport is economical in transportation of few persons and relatively smaller amount of goods over short distances. (iv) It provides door to door services thus the cost of loading and unloading is much lower. (v) It is used as feeder to other modes of transport. To reach any destination be it railway station, sea port or airport, one needs to travel through roads.
