The administration informed Parliament on Friday that the information regarding students who study MBBS programmes abroad is not kept centrally. In a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Health Bharati Pravin Pawar stated in a written response that a student who has obtained a foreign medical degree from a medical institution abroad must pass the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) before applying for registration to practise medicine in India.

She said that in order to be admitted to the MBBS programme, an Indian citizen or an Indian citizen who resides outside of India must pass the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET), as stated in clause 8(iv) of the Medical Institution Regulation, 2002, on or after May 2018.

“For such individuals, the NEET result will be deemed to represent the eligibility certificate, and the NMC will not need to grant additional approval (National Medical Commission). Because of this, information about students who study medicine overseas is not kept centrally “explained the minister. She was replying to a query about whether the Center has information on medical students who study overseas and whether there is a requirement for those students to pass a test before they can practise medicine in India.
