IIT Madras has created a lifecycle management system that can save maintenance costs and speed up the rehabilitation of offshore oil facilities, according to New Delhi. IIT Madras is creating the Structural Integrity Management System (SIMS) for the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). According to the institute, ONGC will be able to monitor, evaluate, and assess its structural state as well as build up methods to determine whether an offshore structure of ONGC is fit for service.

The Offshore Structures Group at IIT Madras’ ocean engineering department created the IIT Madras SIMS system for ONGC. The institution asserts that the recently created system features a sizable database management system with important data on structural and other design-related data that can be quickly accessible, aiding the ONGC in operating more effectively. The Institute of Engineering and Ocean Technology (IEOT), offshore assets, offshore engineering services, inspection teams from ONGC, and offshore engineering assets will all have access to the SIMS system.

The IIT Madras research group that created the SIMS for ONGC was led by S Nallayarasu, the department head of ocean engineering. At a ceremony on the IIT Madras campus today, on July 14, V Kamakoti, the director of IIT Madras, gave Pankaj Kumar, the director of ONGC, the SIMS system (offshore). “SIMS process offers a proactive strategy to monitor, evaluate, and assess the structural condition and design a mechanism to validate the suitability of an offshore structure for service. It entails the creation of a database management system for more than 330 platforms, the creation of a risk-based underwater inspection methodology (RBUI), and the creation of a reliability analysis scheme for the fatigue life of tube joints, according to Nallayarasu.
