Students at Jawaharlal Nehru University said that recent rainstorms caused a section of a balcony and a roof in two different hostels to fall. There was no quick response from the university.
Sudheer Pratap Singh, dean of students at JNU, did not answer PTI’s calls or texts for a reaction. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) stated in a statement that roof collapses are becoming frequent occurrences in the university. The assaults happened on Monday in the university’s Periyar and Kaveri residence halls. The occurrences didn’t result in any injuries. However, the dormitories’ deteriorating state raised worries from the students. The Periyar hostel’s balcony partially collapsed.
“The balcony on the first story suddenly fell, and my room is on the ground floor. I had arrived there. I was somehow saved, “a student who wished to remain anonymous claimed. “In a separate incident, a hostel room’s roof in Kaveri hostel partially collapsed. In the university, these instances have increased in frequency. The hostels are in terrible shape. There are various events every day “The pupil tacked on.
At a hostel in JNU on April 13, a section of the bathroom ceiling collapsed, injuring a student. Every day, new reports of dormitory roofs collapsing surface. Currently, the rainy season has caused moisture to accumulate; as a result, water is continuously flowing from the walls and roofs. The Periyar Hostel’s roof gave way on Monday after collapsing the day before. In Kaveri Hostel, a comparable event was also reported, according to the ABVP statement.
The JNU reported receiving a grant of Rs 56.34 crores in April for hostel upkeep and repairs. “A grant of 56.34 crores is given to JNU for hostel upkeep and renovations. In keeping with her commitment to providing a student-centric and welcoming administration, VC Prof. Santishree D. Pandit thanks the UGC and MoE for releasing the grant “Just after the incident on April 13, the JNU tweeted.
