The Union health ministry is anticipated to declare soon that the end date for MBBS interns to finish their necessary year-long program has been pushed back to June 30, according to official sources on Thursday. Currently, the due date for the internship stands at March 31, 2023.
The Indian Medical Association, student government organizations, potential applicants, and multiple state agencies have asked the ministry to extend the eligibility date until June 30, 2023. Reports state that students and their families are now demanding that if the MBBS internship completion date is pushed back, then the date of the NEET PG exam should be delayed as well.
At present, the NEET PG entrance examination for 2023 has been planned for the 5th of March. FORDA (Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association) has also requested an extension of the MBBS internship cut-off date, stating that the current choice has extensive effects and has left numerous students with a grim outlook.
In a letter to Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, FORDA expressed that the unfortunate decision has caused a majority of interns in the country to become ineligible, eliminating any competition. This has put a multitude of others in a state of uncertainty. Especially in states like Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and more, this new rule has excluded interns who will not finish their program until after the specified date.
FORDA noted that this sudden implementation could give rise to a multitude of mental distress and anxiety amongst the students who are already feeling overwhelmed and disconcerted by the existing delays and issues concerning medical education in India.
