Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, stated on Wednesday that each state should have the freedom to use its own language and that students should be permitted to take exams in that language. As part of the Bharat Jodo Yatra that he was leading, the former AICC president made these remarks while speaking with over 1,800 young people from all over Karnataka about unemployment and associated concerns.

Language is much more than just a tool for communication. According to Rahul Gandhi, “a language has history, creativity, and hope in it. Every State should have the freedom to use its own language, he argued, and if students wish to take their exams in that language, they should be able to. Rahul Gandhi’s statement comes in the midst of controversy surrounding a recent suggestion by a Parliamentary Committee that the national language of instruction in technical and non-technical higher education institutions, such as IITs, be Hindi in the Hindi-speaking States.

The usage of English should be voluntary, it was stated. Many political figures, including former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin, and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, have objected to the Parliamentary Committee’s recommendation and referred to it as “Hindi imposition” in southern States where Hindi is not as widely spoken.
