On Monday, the Karnataka High Court extended the stay on the government’s directive to hold new exams to fill 545 police sub-inspector positions (PSI). The court agreed to continue hearing the petitions objecting to the stay until October 19. The matter would be “heard on priority,” according to the Division Bench. After learning about the recruitment scam earlier this year, the administration cancelled the examinations on April 29 and said that new exams would be held. A few chosen candidates protested this to the Karnataka Administrative Tribunal (KAT). However, the KAT rejected their appeal. The candidates subsequently petitioned the High Court to overturn the KAT decision, arguing that those who had successfully completed the exam without fraud should not be penalised.
The High Court has ordered the administration not to publish any new tests on September 28. Today, this temporary injunction was extended. Due to sickness, the candidates’ senior advocate was unable to appear in court. More than 30 persons have been detained in relation to the scam, including some candidates and police personnel, including the former ADGP (recruitment) Amrit Paul.
