New structural plans for the administrative and academic high-rise blocks of the university are likely to be unveiled on Saturday during a celebration to mark the 106th anniversary of the founding of the ancient Patna University. According to a senior official, the two blocks’ original designs have undergone some alterations. The university’s renowned Wheeler Senate House, which was built on this day in 1917 and is situated between the banks of the Ganga River and the historic Ashok Rajpath, is currently hosting the foundation day celebrations.
Chandra Shekhar, the minister of education for Bihar, is the special guest. On October 1, we will commemorate the 106th anniversary of Patna University’s founding. The campus will receive two additional structures as per the plan: a G+9 administration block and a G+10 academic block. According to the senior official, who spoke to PTI, “some adjustments have been made in the structural designs of the two proposed buildings, and the new designs are anticipated to be shown today during the foundation day event.” The location of the two buildings will be close to the vice chancellor’s official bungalow at the institution (VC).
Later on, throughout the function, further information is anticipated to surface. Numerous historic buildings can be found on the Patna University campus, including the main administrative building of Patna College, built in the Dutch era in 1863, and stunning buildings from the British era built later, including the old administrative block, the Wheeler Senate House, and the Patna Science College buildings. The campus’s appearance will be drastically changed by the infrastructure upgrade. In order to make room for the new blocks, the 1947-built New Hostel, also known as Nutan Chhatravas, which was located close to the Minto Hostel, was demolished recently.
“We required space because the New Hostel had been vacant for the previous ten years. Therefore, it has been destroyed. The two blocks will resemble a L when viewed from above, but they will be two separate blocks that are not joined “explained the official. In 2017, Patna University celebrated its 100th anniversary, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the celebration. The university’s founding coincided with the birth of the new provinces of Bihar and Orissa in 1912, hence its inspiring history is also the history of contemporary Bihar. The university shaped the intellectual and cultural lives of its students, writing a new chapter in the province’s history. The first VC of Patna University was J G Jennings.
The Senate and Syndicate, the university’s governing organisations, were established in 1919. Known attorney Sir Sultan Ahmed served as the university’s first Indian vice chancellor (1923–30). A celebration was conducted in 2019 to celebrate the illustrious Patna University Library’s 100 years since its founding in 1919. The Wheeler Senate House, the location of the foundation day event, is named after Sir Henry Wheeler, the province’s then-governor and chancellor of the university, who had dedicated it in 1926.
