The Basic Course in Medical Education and Technology (BCMET) completion deadline has been loosened for one year, according to the National Medical Commission (NMC). The decision was made after the medical commission heard several complaints from medical colleges about the lack of BCMET slots at the authorised institutions.
Medical schools are allowed to select faculty members in wide specialties (MD/MS) and super specialties (DM/MCh) according to the criteria for teachers’ eligibility in medical institutions, which take effect in 2022. According to the official announcement, faculty members must have completed the Basic Course in Medical Education and Technology (BCMET) from a facility approved by the National Medical Commission in order to be promoted to the position of professor or associate professor. Many faculty members were not getting promoted since there were no places available for the BCMET. According to the NMC, “it has been agreed to offer relaxation for completion of the BCMET for one year from the date of publication of the notice” to avoid the difficulties the faculty was experiencing.
The notice was issued by the NMC on July 25, 2022.
The announcement further said that the faculty who took advantage of the relaxation had three years from the date of promotion to complete the specified course. The BCMET must be completed within three years of the promotion date for the professors who have already been promoted earlier on such flexibility.
