The legislative panel proposed that the medium of instruction in IITs, central institutions, and Kendriya Vidyalayas in Hindi-speaking states should be Hindi, and in other regions of India their respective indigenous languages, reviving the “Hindi imposition” argument. The Tamil Nadu chief minister called the suggestions in the 11th volume of the Parliamentary Committee on Official Language to report a “direct onslaught on India’s soul” and denounced them in a Twitter thread.

He emphasised that the report had suggested that Hindi be used as the primary language of instruction in all central institutions, including the Kendriya Vidyalayas, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Indian Institutes of Technology, and Indian Institutes of Management. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu stated that Tamil has equal rights with the other 22 languages included in the Constitution’s Eighth Schedule and questioned why “the Union Home Minister Amit Shah-led committee recommended that Hindi be designated the universal language of India.” He also asked for the committee’s recommendation to substitute Hindi for English in the union recruitment examinations’ question papers.

“It is against the spirit of the Constitution to grant undue, unfair advantage to Hindi and discriminate against other Indian languages while raising “Bharat Mata ki Jai” as a political slogan in the parliament,” the CM added, claiming that the imposition of Hindi is against the integrity of India. According to CM MK Stalin, “If adopted, the large non-Hindi speaking populace will be deemed second-class citizens in their own nation.”

According to sources, the committee recommended that Hindi or the local language be utilised as the medium of instruction and that English be made optional in all technical and non-technical institutions across the nation. Rita Bahuguna Joshi, a member of the BJP, stated that Hindi and other regional languages should be used instead of English since it is a “foreign language” and should be destroyed.
