On Thursday, the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) presented a fresh proposal for the Common Entrance Test (CET) ranking scheme to be used for II PU (Pre-University) graduates in the 2020–21 academic year. A division bench chaired by the acting chief justice, Alok Aradhe, received it in a sealed envelope.
The KEA is appealing the decision of a single-judge bench on September 3 that invalidated a note the Authority issued on July 30 before the High Court, which is now hearing the appeal. Only the CET scores of these students would be used to rank them for admission to professional degrees, according to the overturned KEA notice. According to the current regulations, rankings are determined by equally weighting the scores from the II PU and CET.
For students from the 2020–21 batch who are reappearing for the CET this year since their II PU marks from the previous year were distributed internally by colleges, the KEA eliminated this formula. This had been contested by the students in the HC. The KEA was requested by the single-judge court to develop a new formula, and they even proposed a 25:75 ratio for the 2020–21 class. This proposal was not taken into account by the KEA, and the bench invalidated the memo itself. The division bench had also advised finding a cooperative solution.
