The National Education Policy (NEP), which focuses on early childhood education for children older than three years, will be put into effect in Karnataka by November. The NEP would be implemented in 20,000 anganwadis, or schools, during the initial phase. This was said on Thursday during a joint news conference by ministers for women’s and children’s development, Halappa Achar, and school education and literacy minister, BC Nagesh. Nagesh stated that the state’s curriculum framework would be finalised in October and that expert teams were already working on it. He added that if everything goes according to plan, it will be implemented by November in about 20,000 anganwadis/schools. Nagesh stated that the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) from the Union Education Ministry is expected in September.
Once the State’s curriculum framework is finalised, training would be given to Anganwadi workers based on it, he said.
The department of women and child development would collaborate with the department of school education and literacy to execute the NEP (DWCD). According to Achar, there are 66,361 Anganwadi centres in the State. The number of postgraduates among Anganwadi workers is 732; graduates are 6,017; pre-university students are 14,303, and SSLC graduates are 40,786. (class 10).
Although there might be some limitations for Anganwadi workers with an SSLC, he added that attempts would be made to teach them. Therefore, 20,000 anganwadis where there are employees with a PG, graduate, or PUC as qualification have been picked for the first phase. The Ministers stated that the Tata Foundation has taught almost 14,000 Anganwadi teachers in the underdeveloped Kalyana district of Karnataka, adding that it is intended to offer various sorts of training depending on the qualifications of the Anganwadi personnel.
