In order to redo the Common Entrance Test rankings for this year, the Karnataka High Court has ordered the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) to use the formula recommended by a technical committee. Students who complete their second year of college in 2020–21 will use the formula. The KEA has been instructed by a division bench of the High Court of Karnataka to create the ranking list in accordance with the recommendations provided by the committee led by DR B Thimme Gowda, vice chairman of the Karnataka State Higher Education Council.

The committee recommended that students from the 2021 PU cohort have their qualifying marks reduced by an average of 6 points in physics, 5 points in chemistry, and 7 points in mathematics, for a total loss of 6 points for 100 qualifying points. On Thursday, the KEA sent the recommendation to a division bench by Acting Chief Justice Alok Aradhe in a sealed envelope. The High Court instructed the authorities to proceed with the CET ranking based on this methodology on Friday.

In order for COVID-19 year (2020–21) students’ CET ranks this year to be “normalised” with 2021–22 batch PU–II students, a technical committee established by the State government has recommended an average deduction of six marks in each subject from their PU–II grades. Based on intricate computations, the committee produced two sets of solutions. In the end, it was advised that students in 2020–21 lose an average of 6 marks. Additionally, it advised that “seats in IT-related branches in universities may be expanded by roughly 10% as per the previous year’s preferred selection of seats.”

The technical committee was established on September 20 as a result of a State government directive. Its members included Prof. N Yathindra, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology, Dr. B Thimme Gowda, Vice Chairman of the Karnataka State Higher Education Council, Prof. S A Kori, Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Andhra Pradesh, N Ravichandran, Director of Technical Education. The HC dismissed the KEA’s appeal against the single-judge bench’s ruling from September 3 that invalidated a note that the Authority had issued on July 30. The note advised rating 2020–21 students only on CET scores. The II PU and CET marks were divided equally among the students in the 2021–22 class in order to determine to rank.
