The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) staged a sit-in protest on the campus, raising several issues including “delay” in scholarship disbursal, problems related to infrastructure, and “discrepancies” in the PhD prospectus, a statement by the students’ body said on Monday. According to the report, the vice chancellor’s office received numerous requests for appointments to discuss essential concerns on campus.

However, the progress in addressing the university’s infrastructure issues is far from satisfactory, and more funds are needed to maintain hostels and academic buildings. For making the campus more accessible for people with disabilities, the statement said. “Earlier, the administration responded to one of our demands by providing a detailed reply on the hostel-to-hostel expenditure,” it said.

The management “failed” to provide specific information regarding problems with the campus library, the operation of the ICC, or carrying out an access audit of the campus, according to the JNUSU. While new inverters, ACs, and geysers were purchased for the vice chancellor at JNU, it was claimed that students did not even have enough money to pay their mess debts. “It should also be noted here that through a recent RTI, it has come to our notice that the cost spent by JNU Vice Chancellor on renovation is Rs 8.6 lakhs between February and May 2022,” it stated. The student body also claimed that there had been violations of the reservation guidelines throughout the process of allocating dormitory rooms to the class of 2022.

“The JNUSU will continue with the sit-in protest until all its demands are met,” the statement said.
