Esha, a graduate of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), received the European Space Agency’s Space Sustainability Award 2021 in the category of “Special Mention of Jury” at the European Interparliamentary Space Conference (EISC). The award presentation took place on September 16 in Paris, France at the French Senate. Esha graduated from JMI with a BTech in mechanical engineering in 2013.

“Esha has created a design for a cutting-edge sailing tool for the following generation of satellites. With the least amount of mass and sail area, this sailing gear may steadily raise the orbital decay rate. A patent application has also been made for this concept “a JMI official statement said. The Space Sustainability Award seeks to recognise and reward young scientists for their contributions to the sustainable use of space. Additionally, it gives these scientists a stage on which to present their concepts to the EISC.

Professor Najma Akhtar, vice chancellor of JMI, commended Esha on her outstanding accomplishment and expressed the hope that it will inspire other female students at the university to set lofty goals for themselves and work tirelessly to attain them. Esha is presently employed as a research associate for the Leibniz-Institute of Composite Material GmbH in Germany’s Department of Component Development. After earning her BTech from JMI, she spent one and a half years working in consulting before travelling to Singapore to enrol in Nanyang Technological University’s and Technical University of Munich’s Masters programmes in aerospace engineering. Associate Professor of the JMI Hindi Department is her father, Dr. Anil Kumar.
