Jamia Hamdard has initiated the 'Media Matters' series, which evaluates the influence of media on society and democracy.

The Centre for Media and Mass Communication Studies at Jamia Hamdard University has initiated a new series called “Media Matters” which aims to provide an avenue for critical discussion and conversation about the media field and its effects on society and democracy. This idea was formulated by Professor Farhat Basir Khan, who dedicated it to Hakeem Abdul Hameed, the Founder-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard. The opening of the series was attended by the keynote speaker, Professor Sanjay Dwivedi, the Director General of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Dr.) M Afshar Alam, Prof. Reshma Nasreen, Director of the Centre and Prof. Farhat Basir Khan. The students, faculty and experts were present in large numbers at the event.

On the occasion, Professor (Dr.) M. Afshar Alam, the Vice-Chancellor, expressed that this endeavor will give an opportunity to analyze the media’s influence on democracy and the potential to enable citizens to interact with media more knowledgeably and wisely. It will also help to make the media industry more transparent and moral, in the end fortifying the democratic process and encouraging a more educated and involved public.

Professor Farhat Basir Khan has said that this series will be a platform to examine and discuss the effects of the media industry on society and democracy. It is beneficial not just to students and people in the mass communication and journalism professions, but to anyone wanting to comprehend the role of the media in the world today. The series will explore how the media sector has evolved and increased over time, such as journalism, advertising, broadcasting, film and radio.

At the event, Professor Sanjay Dwivedi highlighted the move away from traditional media to digital media and the necessity of local languages in the digital space. He then concluded by stressing India’s need to take a larger portion of the global media market and gave people the opportunity to listen to and interact with important figures in the journalism and communication industries. It is open to everyone and will be a great resource for those wanting to learn more about the part media plays in influencing the world.

Reshma Nasreen, Director of the Centre, expressed her appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for the formal launch of the initiative and declared that the endeavour demonstrated Jamia Hamdard University’s dedication to social responsibility and civic engagement. The curator of the series added that the initiative would be a substantial stride in the direction of the university’s mission of producing knowledgeable citizens and upholding transparency and moral values in the media industry.
