The Delhi Police detained an assistant professor at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University on Friday, according to the LG secretariat, for allegedly using his sister’s name to apply for a teaching position while posing as lieutenant governor (LG) VK Saxena. According to a statement, a person claiming to be the LG phoned Mahesh Verma, vice chancellor of GGSIU, on September 30 to urge him to choose a particular applicant for the school’s English department. The VC contacted the LG secretariat to inquire about the call’s validity. No such call had been made, and the incident had not been reported to the police, as he discovered.

On October 2, it was reported that an FIR had been filed at the Dwarka police station for impersonation. Later, the recruitment exercise was scrapped. The statement read: “During the investigation, the accused was recognised as an assistant professor in the department of economics who had called, pretending to be the LG, for employment of his sister in the university’s English department. The call was made from a number based in the United Kingdom, according to the call detail record (CDR) of the vice chancellor’s landline number, it stated.

Investigation revealed that the UK number was also used to call the assistant professor’s father’s and sister’s mobile phones, the statement stated. When questioned, the pair divulged the identity of the suspect. On September 27, the accused left for the UK. It stated that he is the subject of a lookout circular (LOC) and that an investigation is ongoing. The university discovered that several other officials were involved in the scandal during its first investigation, and it announced that appropriate action has been taken against them. A show-cause notice has also been given to the accused after it was discovered that he is in the UK without the necessary prior authorization from the competent government.

According to the statement, the LG has taken a very serious stance on the situation and highlighted that it has never been his manner of operation to make calls or entertain any requests that contained improper favours, advantages, or unethical behaviour. Additionally, he advised everyone involved to strictly confirm with his secretariat if they got any such calls or messages.
