Youths between 17 and 21 would be inducted under the Agnipath scheme for a four-year stay, with 25% being established for regular duty. After the plan’s June 14 unveiling, there were violent demonstrations against it for almost a week in many states, and several opposition parties called for its cancellation.
The government announced a number of appeasement measures, such as giving Agniveers preference in central paramilitary forces and defence public sector undertakings upon retirement, on June 16, raising the upper age restriction for enlistment under the scheme from 21 to 23 for the year 2022.
