Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi have built a mobile app called ‘SwasthGarbh’ to offer antenatal care and on-the-spot medical aid to expecting mothers.

The institute announced in a statement that they had created the first pregnancy app that offers quick access to medical advice that is clinically approved and trustworthy. Both patients and physicians are able to use the mobile app without any cost as it is downloadable on the Google Play Store.

More apps are used in the field of pregnancy than any other area of medicine, but there is a lack of participation from clinicians. In order to address this need, Sahil Sharma, Deepak Sharma, Vatsla Dadhwal, and Aparna Sharma from the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Roorkee and AIIMS in Delhi created ‘SwasthGarbh’, a comprehensive, patient-focused interactive platform to promote prenatal care.

The SwasthGarbh App helps pregnant women, particularly those in rural areas, by making sure they have timely antenatal care visits, documenting each medical examination, and ensuring adherence to medication. The advantages of this App have been featured in a research paper published in a respected, peer-reviewed journal.

Deepak Sharma of the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Roorkee emphasized that the alarming Neonatal Mortality Rate necessitates the SwasthGarbh Mobile App to provide medical assistance to pregnant women and better maternal-fetal health. This app is a contribution from IIT Roorkee to all women and a step in the direction of Prime Minister Modi’s Atmanirbhar Swasth Bharat mission.

Rama Chaudhry, Dean of Research at AIIMS New Delhi, pointed out the usefulness of the SwasthGarbh App, emphasizing its ability to offer potential solutions to regular pregnancy issues. He expressed the aim of making the app available to every home in India, hence saving precious maternal and fetal lives.

KK Pant, the director of IIT Roorkee, expressed his congratulations to the researchers and noted that the coronavirus crisis has highlighted the usefulness of telemedicine in healthcare. He added that the mobile phone, which is used by more than a billion people worldwide, has the capability to revolutionize the medical sector and enhance healthcare.
