The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) was acknowledged at the Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards. These awards recognize the vastness of the educational industry. IIT-M’s BS in Data Science and Applications program was presented with a silver award for “Best Online Program” and NPTEL (National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning) – a collaboration between IITs and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) – was awarded gold in the “Lifelong Learning” category.

The Wharton-QS Reimagine Education Awards honored the accomplishments of educators, schools, and organizations in the area of education. They were chosen by a panel of specialists. This year’s ceremony was held at the Wharton Campus in Philadelphia, USA. IIT Madras’ online BS degree in Data Science and Applications has more than 15,000 students taking classes in a combination of online and offline formats. Admissions for the qualifying exam for the degree program will be open until January 16, 2023.

The NPTEL is a joint venture of seven IITs and IISc, directed by IIT Madras. This program is financed by the Ministry of Education to improve engineering education in India by providing free online classes and video lectures. The program offers free online courses, videos, translations, industry partnerships, and college partnerships to students.

Director V Kamakoti expressed appreciation for the BS degree program and NPTEL at IIT M being recognized with awards from Wharton-QS Reimagine Education, saying they are delighted. He highlighted that technology is beneficial in providing high-quality education to learners anywhere. He assured that they will stay committed to innovating and finding new ways to improve the educational experience for students.

Vignesh Muthuvijayan, the coordinator of IIT Madras, highlighted the distinct features of the BS degree program. He stated that it offers an opportunity to learn data science and programming, for which there is plenty of demand for qualified professionals, to individuals of any age and any background. The specially crafted program gives students the necessary job-related skills if they are interested in entering the data science field.

Andrew Thangaraj, Programme Coordinator at IIT Madras, remarked on NPTEL and its role in the open education community, noting that NPTEL certification courses allow for equitable access to all kinds of learners, allowing them to use these courses to advance their skills and acquire new ones.
