IIT Roorkee organizes Natural-hazard Symposium for Indian Himalayas 2022

The Department of Hydrology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee is organizing the Natural-hazard Symposium for the Indian Himalayas (NSIH 2022) as part of Co-PREPARE.

At the Hydrology department and Institute for Environmental Sciences and Geography, University of Potsdam, Germany, a new project called Co-PREPARE supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and DAAD is focusing on natural hazards in the Indian Himalayan region.

The initiative promotes collaboration between IIT Roorkee and the University of Potsdam (UP) in order to increase capability in collaborative hazard research through knowledge sharing. The theme of the “Natural-hazard Symposium for Indian Himalayas 2022” on October 12 and 13 is “Global Change and Impacts in Mountains.” The conference aims to raise awareness of various research viewpoints in the Indian Himalayan region so that people may comprehend the experts’ historical perspectives and how they anticipate the future playing out. The goal is to foster communication between different practitioners and researchers working in the Himalayan region. These conversations will provide guidelines for future studies on natural-hazard domains in the Indian Himalayas.

Experts on the increasing hydro-climatological extremes, risk, vulnerability, adaptation, and citizen science in the Indian Himalayan Region presented the keynote speeches. In order to highlight the multidisciplinary nature of the natural hazard domain and the demand for interdisciplinary collaboration, the panel discussions concentrated on the concurrent and compounding multi-hazards in the Himalayan region. Professor Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi and Professor Axel Bronstert, directors of both institutes, attended the seminar. The Director of IIT Roorkee, Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, stressed during his inaugural speech that “the modern world is facing increasingly complicated risks. Technology-based solutions are required to address these threats. We make an effort to stay up to date on the opportunities and problems in the field of disaster management and mitigation.

The natural-hazard symposium for Indian Himalayas 2022 seeks to contribute towards the national vision in this domain.”
