Delhi University takes initiatives to curb ragging

To ensure a smooth transition for students for the academic year 2022–2023, the proctorial board held a meeting at the University of Delhi (DU). Delhi Police and DU representatives were present at the meeting where a number of decisions were made to maintain order and avoid ragging on campus.

The sexual harassment of women at work (prevention, prohibition, and reparation) act, 2013, as well as the provisions of ordinances XV-B and XV-C, have all been mandated for enforcement by the colleges and departments. According to the university’s anti-ragging policies, students who engage in ragging may be subject to suspension, expulsion, the revocation of their degree, or other sanctions.

The following actions need to be taken by the university in the academic year 2022-2023.

  • The Supreme Court’s ruling against ragging mandated that all students sign an agreement while applying to their respective universities.
  • From November 2 to November 11, 2022, DU will set up two joint control rooms at each of the north and south campuses.
  • In both campuses’ strategic locations, the university has posted anti-ragging posters in both English and Hindi.
  • With the aid of NCC and NSS student volunteers, colleges, centres, and hostels are required to establish anti-ragging, disciplinary panels, and vigilance squads to monitor ragging.
  • Every college will have a police picket outside it, and women’s colleges will receive extra help. All instances of ragging will be handled in accordance with the university’s regulations, which allow administrators to impose sanctions if necessary. Anytime a crisis arises, aid from the police might also be requested.
  • To stop ragging and eve-teasing, the Delhi Police has placed female officers both within and outside the university’s campus. To safeguard their safety while living off-campus, students must make sure that the local police have confirmed their paid guest accommodations.
  • To keep an eye on ragging on campus and to take appropriate measures, Du has already implemented patrolling.
  • To prevent ragging, the UGC has put tight rules on their website, ugc.ac.in. As per the UGC regulations, the principal, head or provost is required to submit weekly reports of the compliance of the anti-ragging measures during the first three months and a monthly report thereafter.
