The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences has been asked by the students to postpone the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) exams for the final year. The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) Karnataka State Committee has requested that RGUHS postpone the exam by one month in order to support the students.

The final BDS exams for 2022 have been set for August by the RGUHS. However, a number of students have voiced worries about not having enough time to study for exams and not getting enough clinical experience because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many students are under pressure since COVID has disrupted the prior and current academic years, resulting in insufficient clinical exposure, a dearth of clinical postings, poor online classes, and insufficient time to study for tests, according to the AIDSO.

“The current final year classes began in January,” it continued. According to RGUHS rules, students in their final year should have 10 months of class time and clinical placements. However, because of the timeline, students are required to sit for exams after only six months of study time rather than the recommended 10 months. And the syllabus is often incomplete in colleges. The RGUHS clinical posts quota is not nearly half filled in the majority of universities.

The AIDSO also carried out a survey in this regard. 917 of the 1,250 BDS final-year students have signed the Google form. A month’s exam postponement was chosen by about 99.7% of them. Insufficient clinical placements, an incomplete syllabus, and a lack of preparation time were cited as grounds for postponement requests by almost 86.2% of students. 28 per cent of students want the exam postponed by two months, while 65.4% of students want the institute to postpone the exam by one month.
