According to sources, faculty personnel from the prominent technical institutes here may be sent on deputations abroad, and the offshore campuses of IITs may be renamed “India International Institute of Technology.” They stated that the ratio of Indian students in foreign universities must be less than 20%, even if IITs abroad may be free to choose their student populations.
“Recommendations from a committee appointed by the Center for the Global Expansion of IITs have been provided. It has been argued that the specific higher education institution should own the right to launch an IIT abroad (HEI). According to the sources, the new institution may be known as the “Indian International Institute of Technology at XXXX (place).”
A clause should allow for the deputation of professors from an established IIT to a foreign institution. This is especially crucial during the new institute’s early years since it may benefit much from the expertise of the professors at this location, they continued. The Middle East and South Asian nations have been asking several IITs to establish their campuses. IIT Madras is looking into opportunities in Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Tanzania, while IIT Delhi is considering opening a campus in the United Arab Emirates. A 17-person group led by Dr K Radhakrishnan, leader of the IIT Council’s standing committee, was established by the Center earlier this year. The panel has recommended creating a generic system like IIT, NIT or IISER, under which a series of institutes can be established as the current IIT Act does not provide for setting up an IIT outside the country.
The source explained the reasoning behind the recommended name, claiming that it is sufficiently similar to IIT with the word “international” added to clarify that the institute is located outside of India. “The newly founded IITs will be able to develop their own identities and ethos while building on the strengths of current IITs thanks to the variation in terminology with enough resemblance.
The offshore campus ought to be a separate legal entity, guided by an Indian institution with a unique ethos, “sources claimed. “According to the exact size, the panel suggests that there may be more than one model for establishing the institute, including campuses run by individual IITs, a combination of IITs and HEIs, or an individual or group of IITs working with a reputable host university. “For instance, working with a reputable host university will be favoured in the UK. However, this partnership must be entered into carefully to ensure that the goals and obligations of the participating IITs are in line with those of the host university “sources claimed.
The semester system may be used in IITs abroad, and semester start and end dates may be coordinated with the academic calendar. “A program’s enrollment should be sufficient to make the course financially sustainable. But the precise amount can be left up to the institute. The commission has advised that the proportion of Indian students in these institutions should be less than 20%, even though these universities should serve the local student community, which may include the Indian diaspora “they claimed.
