After a “calm” protest demanding the release of former Delhi University professor GN Saibaba at the university’s Arts faculty, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) reported police detained five student activists. The activists, according to the student organisation, were escorted to Burari police station. However, Delhi Police didn’t have anything to say right away.
The demonstration was organised shortly after the Bombay High Court’s decision to clear Saibaba and others in a case involving Maoist ties was suspended by the Supreme Court on Saturday. “Students from the Arts faculty were violently detained by Delhi Police. A nonviolent rally in support of GN Saibaba was broken up by the police “a protester alleged.
After the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur division ruled that the sanction order issued to prosecute the defendant in the case under the strict guidelines of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was “poor in law and invalid,” Saibaba was freed from prison on Friday. The appeals filed by five additional criminal defendants were also accepted by the supreme court, clearing them of all charges. The prosecution had requested that the supreme court reverse the judgment. 52-year-old Saibaba is being held at Nagpur Central Jail.
