JEE Main Counselling

In JEE Main, there are three counselling processes- JoSAA, CSAB NEUT, and CSAB SFTI.

JoSAA- The combined JEE Main and JEE Advanced counseling process are known as JoSAA.
CSAB NEUT- For vacant seats in the North East and Union Territories, the CSAB NEUT is conducted.
CSAB SFTI- For 18 SFTIs, the Central Seat Allocation Board conducts a separate counseling process known as CSAB SFTI.

Candidates who receive a seat in JEE Main 2023 Counseling must report to the college to which they have been assigned, along with all the necessary documents for admission.


Dates for JEE Main Counselling 2023

Following the release of the final exam results, JEE Main Counselling 2023 will take place. The table below contains the tentative dates and schedule for JEE Main Counseling in 2023:

JEE Main Counselling 2023: JoSAA

  • Candidates who qualify for JEE Main 2023 but do poorly in JEE Advanced are still eligible for seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, among other colleges.
  • Candidates who have passed JEE Main 2023 must register online and choose their preferred college and course.
  • The allocation of seats will take place online, taking into account the applicant’s rank, category, and seat availability, among other factors.
  • The applicants must report to their designated institute for document verification and fee payment after the seat allocation.

Steps involved in JEE Main Counselling and Seat Allotment Procedure

Step 1: Online Registration

  • Select the JoSAA link from the official website.
  • JEE Main 2023 Application Number, Password, and Security Pin are required for login.
  • Click “I Agree” after carefully reading the instructions.
  • Complete the necessary fields on the JoSAA Counseling Form.
  • Select the Declaration, then click the Submit button.
  • Verify all the information provided, then press the “Confirm Registration” button.

Step 2: Online Choice Filling and Locking

  • Pick wisely when selecting colleges and programs.
  • Candidates have the option to modify, edit, or delete their selected options.
  • Before the deadline, lock the options.
  • After each round of JEE Main 2020 Counseling, choice locking is possible.

Step 3: JoSAA Seat Allocation for 2023

Before assigning the highest possible seat in accordance with candidates’ preferences, the counseling and seat allocation authority, JoSAA, will consider the following factors:

  • Applicants’ Category (Gen., OBC-NCL, SC, etc.)
  • JEE Main 2023 rank list, All India Rank (AIR) 
  • Based on the candidates’ order of preference for academic institutions and programs
  • The availability of seats under various seat quotas or categories for which the candidate is qualified.

Note: A few days after Choice Locking, candidates will receive notification of Seat Allotment via mail or SMS on the registered email address and mobile number, respectively.

Step 4: Payment of the seat acceptance fee and document confirmation

  • Pay the seat acceptance fee through net banking or an e-Challan for the assigned seats.
  • At the reporting center, all of the documents will be checked.
  • A provisional admission letter will be issued after the documents have been verified and the fee has been paid.

Note: Candidates in the Open Category will have to pay a seat acceptance fee of INR 35,000, while those in the SC/ST/SC-PwD/ST-PwD/GEN-PwD/OBC-NCL-PwD categories will pay INR 15,000.

 Step 5: Reporting to the Allotted College

Reporting to the allotted institutes with original certificates and documents on the scheduled date and time is the last step in the JEE Main 2023 Counseling process.

  • Each round will be followed by verification. Any alleged violation of the rules could result in the candidate’s disqualification.
  • At the time of verification, candidates must present all required documentation.
  • When reserving a seat, bring the originals of all necessary documents, as well as multiple attested copies, to the reporting center.

JEE Main Counselling 2023- CSAB NEUT and CSAB SFTI

 Similar to JoSAA, CSAB NEUT and CSAB SFTI offer primary counseling. An overview of counseling for NEUT and SFTI is provided below:

CSAB NEUT Counseling

  • In the North East Region and Union Territories, it is held to fill vacant seats.
  • The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) would plan the counseling.

CSAB SFTI Counseling

  • It is held in order to admit applicants to Technical Self-Financing Institutes.
  • Seat distribution strictly follows the preference lists that candidates filled out based on their respective JEE Main All India Ranks (AIR) in Paper I and Paper II.
  • The CSAB SFTI is comprised of 34 participating institutes.

 Eligibility for Admission to NITs, IITs, and CFTIs through JEE Main

  • Admission to the B.Tech., B.Arch., B.E., or B. The candidate must have obtained at least a 75 percent grade in the 12th grade or must have placed in the top 20 percentile to qualify for planning courses at these institutes based on All India Rank.
  • The minimum 12th-grade GPA requirement for SC/ST candidates is 65 percent.

Eligibility for Admission to B.Arch through JEE Main

  • The prerequisite for admission to the architecture program is passing an exam at the conclusion of the qualifying examination with a minimum combined score of 50% in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
  • The candidate must have obtained a minimum of 50% in mathematics and 50% overall on the qualifying exam to be eligible for B. Planning.
  • Subject combinations required for admission to B.E./B.Tech, B.Arch, and B. Planning programs at IITs, NITs, and other CFTIs shall be as follows:

  • Other technical institutions that plan to take part in counseling through CSAB / JoSAA may adopt the aforementioned criteria.
  • If a state intends to admit students to engineering colleges connected to state universities, the state may create a totally different rank list in accordance with their standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. Can I still take part in the subsequent rounds of counselling if I don’t want the seat offered through the JEE Main 2023 Seat Allotment?

Ans. You must not enrol in any courses in which you have no interest. If you decline the seat, you will not be included in the seat allocation process and will not be able to take part in subsequent rounds.

Ques. How is the JEE Main Seat Allocation process carried out?

Ans. The candidates will be given seats in the seat allocation process based on their merit, choice of seat, and seat availability. However, a mock seat allocation will take place prior to the real allocation.

Ques. What does the option to withdraw from JEE Main Counseling mean for the seat acceptance procedure?

Ans. The option to withdraw and report to the institute assigned before the final round of seat allocation is available to candidates who have already accepted the seat.

Ques. What will happen if I don’t “lock” my choices in the JEE Main Counseling 2023?

Ans. The last saved choices or preferences will be automatically locked at the end of the choice-filling time period if you don’t lock them.

Ques. If I accept a seat at NIT but it is upgraded to IIT and I don’t report to IIT, will my seat at NIT still be taken into consideration during JEE Main Counseling?

Ans. No, you will forfeit both of your seats if you don’t show up at IIT. It is necessary to report and confirm your seat’s status. Admissions will be cancelled if this is not done.
